Microsoft vs. Yahoo and the role Google plays!

So most of you who read the business section of your local newspaper or respective new outlet's website already know that Microsoft is making a bid to merge with Yahoo which the initial bid has already been rejected by Yahoo.

A lot of questions come to mind such as can this raise a anti-trust issue? I have to anwsers to this question. The first being that Yahoo has lost its dominance in the search market and the large majority of internet users already use Google for search purposes and a variety of other purposes (services) and as such if Microsoft were to successfully merge with Yahoo it would not grant Microsoft dominance in the search market.

On the other hand Yahoo has a large real estate when it comes to the internet services they offer which Google currently has not chosen to offer such as Games and other services. I think that aside from the Yahoo Search technology that if Microsoft does acquire Yahoo that Yahoo's various services would give Microsoft an unfair advantage over Google and other competitors simply because Google and other emerging competitiors do not currently have products/services such as Yahoo Games and when it comes to most internet users they want to go to "one" place to meet a large majority of their needs to simplify their internet usage practices and make their they spend online more effective and practical.

I personally am pro-Google in the sense that I prefer to use Google services over Microsoft and Yahoo services because generally Google listens to what internet users desire and they implement users requests as best as they can accomodate. I do have my issues with Google from time to time such as I think they can allocate more developers in the Gmail and Blogger development teams to produce more fixes and new features but when it comes down to it Google offers the most free and effective services around right now.

I think that Google needs to hire more developers for its existing flagship products and that it needs to also spend more of its revenue on buying and developing new products to offer under the Google brand...... when will we see Google Games? Google Domains?

On a side note I got word from a reliable source that Gmail will be rolling out some new features in the very near future which a lot of current Gmail users have been wanting.

GOOG-411 Update

Posted by Benjamin Kerensa | 2/12/2008 01:39:00 PM | , | 0 comments »

On behalf of GOOG-411 (A Google Service) users in the United States I contacted Google Corporate Offices regarding the block of Payphones from accessing the service and below is a copy of the response I received from Google Corporate Offices.

We are writing in response to your letter of January 29th, 2008 regarding the complaint received from Benjamin Kerensa.

We understand that Mr. Kerensa has had some difficulties using the GOOG-411 service from payphones. GOOG-411 is a free directory service offered by Google Inc, which is currently only released in development mode (beta). Due to the fact that the GOOG-411 service is free and not advertising supported, the service does not currently allow access from pay phones in the United States. A technical error allowed access from some pay phones at the time of launch in April 2007. The error has since been fixed.

The GOOG-411 service was never promoted or advertised as being specifically available from pay phones. Further to this complaint, Google has revised the GOOG-411 pages to be clearer in this regard.

See, for example, http://www.google.com/goog411/about.html.In terms of customer support, since the product is in beta mode, Google can only offer limited support in the form of the Google Mobile Help Group which is monitored by members of the Mobile Team.GOOG-411 help is also available from the GOOG-411 Google group at http://groups.google.com/group/goog411?hl=en, where this issue of "pay phone access" was discussed and officially answered on May 17, 2007 (thread).

We apologize for any confusion Google may have caused Benjamin K. We assure him that we are constantly working to refine and enhance our products to bring all our users the best experience possible.

Sincerely,
Gosia,

The Google Team

Based on my complaint which was received by Google the Goog-411 website has now been updated to clarify where specifically this service can be used from which was not clear previously.
